Cycling
Denmark is a superb country for cycling. The roads are relatively quiet and the country boasts an attractive undulating landscape. The average Dane cycles 3km per day. Due to its popularity, cyclists enjoy a variety of well-maintained routes and facilities around the towns and in the countryside. It is a safe and fun activity for the whole family - drivers of cars are very accommodating to cyclists, making it an almost surreal experience.
Bicycles can be hired from local tourist offices or bicycle shops. Bicycles are allowed on all Danish ferries, several small passenger boats, most trains, buses and airplanes.
Copenhagen has a generous scheme called Bycykler, in which anyone can borrow a bicycle for free. There are over 1000 bikes available from 1 May to 15 December. These bikes can be found at 125 widely scattered street stands, including S-train stations. To get your free city bike, just deposit a 20kr coin in the stand to release the bike. When you&rsquo re done, you can return it at any stand and get your 20kr coin back.
Enthusiasts can join any one of the 150 annual races that are held around the country, the most popular being the Arhus-Copenhagen Race every June.
Fishing
Denmark has excellent facilities for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. The country abounds with streams and lakes, all well stocked with perch, pike and trout. Sea fishing tours can be arranged with local fishermen at many Danish harbours, and large groups may charter a boat for themselves. Fishing off the shores of Denmark&rsquo s 7500km-long coastline is widely available. Anglers must not take up position within 50 metres of a dwelling place. A fishing license is required in all cases (except for under 18 and over 65, who are free) and can be obtained from Danish post offices, local tourist offices and angling shops. Special licenses for tourists (valid from one day to one week) are available. Anglers are obliged to inform themselves about fishing restrictions and closed seasons. For further information and addresses of angling societies, contact the Danish Sports Fishing Association on +45 75 82 0699.
Golf
Denmark has around 130 golf courses, a number of which are top-quality. Some of the best year-round courses are Copenhagen Golf Club (Scandinavia&rsquo s oldest), the immaculate and beginner-friendly Odense Golf Club, the challenging USGA standard Royal Oak Gold Club, the exceptionally beautiful Harre Vig Golf Club, and the pleasantly sheltered Bornholm Golf Club with oodles of wildlife to keep you entertained. For further information, contact the Danish Golf Union on +45 43 26 2700.
Horse Riding
Horse riding is excellent in Denmark, with fantastic trails and scenic rides spread throughout the country. Strong, steady and smart, Icelandic horses were once used by the Vikings and can be found all over. Especially rewarding are rides in Jutland (Aalborg and Arhus) where trails meander along forested paths, river banks and coastlines. Rides can be organised through riding companies almost everywhere in Denmark at very moderate rates.
Walking & Hiking
Denmark is full of picturesque scenery and peaceful places. Beaches are great for a stroll, the majority boasting outstandingly clean water, silky sand and plenty of space. Walkers are allowed to explore any stretch of coast, no matter who owns it as well as the forests, but you must stay on the paths. Hikers will enjoy Denmark&rsquo s only national park, Rebild Bakker, near Skorping, as well as the Lake District in Sohojlandet, Jutland.
Nude bathing
This is quite common at Danish seaside resorts. At beaches where nude bathing is not officially permitted, bathers are requested to show consideration and follow the directions of the local guards. The only beaches where it is actually prohibited are Henne Strand and Holmsland Klit (both on Jutland&rsquo s western coast). At Bellevue Beach in the metropolitan area, walking in the nude is prohibited while bathing or sunbathing in the nude is not. See online for more information (website: www.strandguide.dk).
Watersports
The long inlets and protected shores on the Danish coast offer easy conditions for windsurfing (and are thus particularly suitable for beginners). Facilities for sailing are excellent: over 500 yachting harbors can be found along the coast and anchorage is allowed at a further 500 islands. Boat hire facilities are widespread. Detailed handbooks and marine charts are available from the Danish Yachting Association (Dansk Sejlunion) (tel/fax: 4326 2182 website: www.sejlsport.dk) or the National Survey and Cadastre (Kort & Matrikelstyrelsen) (tel: 3587 5050 website: www.kms.dk) charts are available for direct download from the KMS Internet site.
Note
All waterscooter traffic is under general prohibition within the Danish sea territory.
Health resorts
These are widespread throughout Denmark. Some offer medical and physiotherapeutic treatment, others simply recreation in beautiful and quiet surroundings.

Welcome to a wonderful day at Helsingør / Elsinore Golf Club
One of Denmark’s oldest golf courses can be found in the north-east corner of Zealand on the outskirts of Elsinore, not far from the ferry link to
Sweden. The golf club was founded in 1927 on the site of a former Royal Danish Army drill ground belonging to the officer’s academy at Kronborg Castle.
Today the golf club features 18 wonderful and very different holes as well as a 9-hole par 3 course. Over the years, Helsingør Golf Club has been rated among the top ten Danish golf courses many times, and the reasons for this are evident to all who play here.
Standing on the clubhouse terrace with a clear view to the 1st tee and 9th, 18th and 13th greens, the visitor is struck by the impression of a beautifully landscaped park where the holes are charmingly encircled by a variety of attractive trees and bushes. Regardless of the time of year, players are always assured an outstanding nature experience at Helsingør Golf Club. And those playing the 10th and 11th holes are rewarded with an impressive view of Sweden nestled across the waters of the Oresund.
The 5606 metre, par 71 course from the yellow tee is not very long, and at first glance it doesn’t look particularly difficult. But make no mistake: the parkland course, with its trees, bushes and small lakes, is very challenging indeed. Fortunately, it’s almost always easy to locate your golf ball, but it can easily mean a few extra strokes if you stray from the fairway.
The golf club’s competent greenskeepers are to thank for the unusually high overall standard of the course. One of the reasons is that over the past few years the Helsingør Golf Club has hosted the European Senior Tour as well as the Ladies European Tour. On both occasions the club was praised to the skies by the otherwise pampered participants – not least for its excellent and very fair greens.
The clubhouse is home to a charming restaurant offering a wide choice of food and beverages at reasonable prices.
A well-stocked pro shop, driving range, putting green and pitching green round out the extensive facilities at this stunning club.
